Agra, the paradise of historical monuments, is city of majestic forts and Agra fort is perfect example of Mughal architecture in India. It is situated near the right bank of Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh, built by Akbar the Great on the ruins of ancient site known as Badalgarh and shaped by other Mughal emperors. Now we see it north-west of the Yamuna from where the Taj Mahal, the Epitome of love, can be seen. The fort is surrounded by the 2.5 km long enclosure wall and boasts of many places such as Jahangir palace and the Khas Mahal built by Saharan; audience hall such as Diwan- e- Khas; and two very beautiful mosques.
It is expanded to 94-acre (3, 80,000 sq m) in a semi circular plan parallel to Yamuna river and its walls were built up to 70 feet high. Two of the fort’s gate is famous; Delhi gate and the Lahore Gate. The Lahore gate is commonly notable as Amar Singh Gate for Amar Singh Rathore. The bastioned fort is made up off red sandstone. The citadel consists off many palaces such as the Shis Mahal, the octagonal tower of Mohd. Burj, the many pillered Diwan- E-Aam constructed in 1628, under the reign of Shahjahan (1630-55) of course the two beautiful Masjids of white marbles; the Moti Masjid or the pearl mosque, constructed in 1646-53 by Shahjahan and the Angina Masjid built under the reign of Aurangjeb (1658-1707).
Several mausoleums are built from pure marble with beautiful carving; all of these monuments reflect unique amalgamation of different religious tic arts in India strongly marked by influence from Persia which is already manifested itself in timurid art. But look at the fate of the irony, the person who built Red fort, has been imprisoned in the same fort by his own son Aurangjeb, looking at the majestic beauty of Taj Mahal, remembering golden days passed with his beloved Mumtaj Mahal and passed away in the Musamman Burj, a tower with beautiful marble balcony.
